Michael Logal

Michael Logal

Michael Logal attended Bennett in the early 1 970’s. In those days Bennett was just a microcosm of the radical changes that had been taking place in America since the mid 1 960’s. Logal was heavily involved in those issues and inspired other students during those turbulent times. His outstanding abilities resulted in his being elected President of the Student Council.

Incredibly, Logal was All High in three of his four years at Bennett playing three different positions. The positions were at center as a sophomore, guard as a junior, and at linebacker as a senior, where he teamed with his good friend David Gibson to form one of the most outstanding duos in Bennett history. Logal was co-captain of the football team in his senior year. He was also a member of numerous championship track teams as a pole vaulter while at Bennett.

Logal’s varied experiences helped him move on to a wonderful opportunity at Hamilton College where he played football for four years and was captain in his senior year. He graduated from 1978 with a BA in Government.

Logal’s “people” skills led him to a productive career in the employment industry. By 1990, Logal and his wife Debby had formed an employment services company in Dallas, Texas, that has been honored numerous times on the Inc. Magazine list as one of the 500 fastest growing companies in America. In 2004, they sold the company and have moved back to Florida, where they presently live.

Logal is currently the Regional V.P. for Apple One Employment Services covering Georgia, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

David Y. Gibson

David Y. Gibson

David Gibson starred in football, track, and throwing the shot put from 1971-74 at Bennett High School. He was All High 2nd team Offensive tackle in 1972 and All High 1st team on defense in 1973. Other noteworthy feats were his achieving the NAACP Scholar Athlete Award in and Co-Captain in Football, both in 1973. In 1973 he also led the team in tackles and played every minute of each game. After graduation from Bennett he attended Columbia University.

He credits coaches Larry Veronica and Jerry Berkman for teaching him the love of the game, setting high standards for academics and his character. He strongly feels that the lessons that he learned at Bennett continue to serve him well to this day.

Since graduating from Bennett he has committed his life to helping children and families through his work with various community based nonprofit organizations. Presently, he is the Executive Director of three public charter schools. He is responsible for over 1,500 Pre-K through 12th grade children; working with low income families and under served communities in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Joe Monte

Joe Monte

Joe Monte was an All-High 1st team selection in 1973 & 1974. The third of three Monte brothers to play at Bennett, (Mike & Rick in late 1960’s/early 1970’s) Joe compiled a career pitching record of 14-2. Pitching in the sectional finals in 1973, Joe gave up one earned run in the Tiger’s 2-1 loss to Tonawanda, a team that had 3 players chosen in the 1973 amateur baseball draft. Going 5-0 in 1974, Joe led the Tigers to an undefeated Cornell Cup championship. In his two All-High seasons, Joe struck out 86 batters in 69 innings and posted a remarkable earned run average of 0.50. In addition to his dominant pitching, Joe contributed a .425 batting average and truly earned the ultimate praise of coach Jerry Berkman in calling Joe “the best picther I ever had at Bennett.” Joe has since retired after 20 years of service at the NFTA and now resides in Cheektowaga with his wife Michelle, and daughters Elaina and Elyse.
