Bennett High School – 100 Years of Sports Highlights
- 1940s Origins: Bennett’s first city titles came in the 1940s – the Tigers won the Cornell Cup (baseball) in 1943 and captured their first Yale Cup (basketball) in 1944. These early championships marked the beginning of a rich athletic tradition.
- Harvard Cup Dominance: Bennett’s football program won eight Harvard Cup championships (Buffalo’s city football title) over the years, highlighted by an unbeaten 7–0 championship season in 1958 and the school’s final Harvard Cup victory in 1968. (The Harvard Cup was the pinnacle of Buffalo high school football before the state playoff era.)
- 1950s “Triple Crown”: The late 1950s were a golden era – Bennett won the city triple crown of major sports: the Cornell Cup in 1957, Harvard Cup in 1958, and Yale Cup in 1959. Multi-sport star Reginald “Reg” Eyre (Class of 1959) was part of all three championship teams, a rare feat in Buffalo history.
- Bob Lanier’s Legacy (1960s): In 1966, 6′11″ center Bob Lanier led the Tigers to the Yale Cup title, averaging 25 points per game. Lanier went on to dominate at St. Bonaventure University (leading the Bonnies to the 1970 NCAA Final Four) and became an 8-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Famer with the Detroit Pistons – one of the greatest athletes ever produced by Bennett.
- Hoops Perfection in 1987: Bennett claimed another city basketball crown in 1987 with an undefeated Yale Cup season, powered by high-scoring guard Trevor Ruffin. Ruffin once erupted for a WNY-record 76 points in a single game (including 12 three-pointers), and he later played in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers. That 1987 Tigers squad even advanced to the state tournament in Glens Falls.
- Baseball Champions: Bennett’s baseball team has also thrived. The Tigers were Cornell Cup city champions for three consecutive years in the 1950s, including an undefeated title season in 1957. They added another Cornell Cup in 1976. In 1978, Bennett broke new ground by reaching the Section VI championship game, after upsetting three-time defending sectional champion Dunkirk in the semifinals – a milestone for Buffalo Public Schools baseball at the time.
- Track & Field Triumphs: The Tigers have a proud track and field tradition as well. Sprinter Lee Jones tied the city record in the 440-yard dash in 1948, and Bennett runners won back-to-back city cross-country championships in 1964 and 1965 (taking home the Columbia Cup) . Under legendary coach Elmer “Rosie” Rosenthal, Bennett’s track and cross-country teams frequently reigned as city champs. (Fun fact: In the 1970s, Bennett even nabbed its first Section VI titles in track & field, extending its success beyond the city league.)
- Tennis Champions: Bennett even dominated boys’ tennis in the 1950s – the Tigers won city tennis championships in 1955 and 1956, led by twin brothers Art and Jim Faturos. The Faturos twins went undefeated through their high school tennis careers (33–0 in match play), anchoring Bennett’s city titles in doubles and singles competition.
- State Football Glory (2022): In 2022, Bennett reached the pinnacle of New York high school football by winning the NYSPHSAA Class AA State Championship. The Tigers dominated Newburgh Free Academy 42–8 in the Syracuse University dome to claim the state title – bringing the first-ever Class AA football state crown home to Buffalo’s public schools. (That championship run came after overcoming early-season adversity, making the triumph even sweeter for the Tigers and Coach Steve McDuffie’s squad.)
- From Bennett to the Big Leagues: The Tigers have produced many athletes who went on to college and pro success. Isaiah McDuffie (Class of 2016) starred at Bennett and Boston College, and today he suits up as a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. Going back a few decades, Bennett alum Don Gilbert quarterbacked at UB in the 1960s and later played professionally in the Canadian Football League. These athletes carry on Bennett’s legacy on the national stage.
- Each of these highlights showcases a chapter of Bennett High School’s 100-year sports history – from city championships in multiple sports to individual stars who left their mark at higher levels. It’s a proud tradition of Tigers athletics that continues to inspire new generations. Go Bennett!
