Robert Maclin

Robert Maclin attended Bennett from 1 957-1 961 . During his 4 years at the school, he participated in cross country, track, and basketball.

Bob was a member of the 1 958 freshman relay team in track. His relay team went undefeated that year, and he, along with his 3 team mates, was named All High.

During his sophomore year, he placed 1 5th in the All High cross country meet. Bob also earned a major letter in basketball.

Picking up steam in his junior year, Maclin earned All High honors, placing 2nd overall in the city wide Columbia Cup cross country meet. A starting guard in basketball, Maclin again earned a major letter. In 1 960, Bob went undefeated in the mile run in each track meet for the Tigers that spring. Bennett clinched the Scalp and Blade trophy championship, thanks to Maclin’s leading point totals. He managed to overlap a runner in every race that year, while again being named to coveted All High status.

The 1 960-61 season saw no drop-off in Maclin’s relentless competitive spirit. Duplicating his junior season, Bob finished second in the All High cross country meet, garnering All High designation in the process. In track, he held off a determined opponent from Tech, and in a desperate drive to the wire, edged his game rival by a single stride. His winning time for the mile was an outstanding 4 minutes and 32 seconds.

Edward Finnerty

Edward Finnerty

Ed was a three sport athlete while at Bennett. His main contribution was as a distance runner. Ed lettered in Cross Country in 1957, ‘58 and ‘59, achieving first team All-High in 1959. The Bennett teams of 1957 and ‘58 won the Columbia Cup, as city champions. Ed’s distance running prowess carried over to track where he ran the 880 yard run, lettering for three years. Ed finished second in the 880 in 1958, ‘59 and ‘60. His leadership qualities led to his being named Captain of both the Cross Country and Track squads. Ed also played on the Yale Cup Champion basketball team of 1959.

Today Ed and his wife of 53 years, Fran, also a Bennett grad, live in Sanborn, NY. Ed always kept up his sports participation, competing in softball until age 67. Ed also played JFK touch football on his company team, and is still active in bowling and golf. Ed now enjoys his retirement by watching his four Grandchildren play hockey, soccer and baseball.

Sam Miloro

Sam Miloro

Sam, a versatile athlete at Bennett, played baseball, basketball and ran cross country. Not only did he receive All High honors in baseball{short stop} in 1961, Sam was named Most Outstanding Athlete that same year. He was also the captain of the ‘61 baseball and basketball teams his senior year.

After pitching a no-hitter in July, 1961, Sam entered Brockport State where he received All-State honors and the MVP award in 1964. He led the nation in stolen bases that same year and thereafter, declined a contract with the Detroit Tigers.

Sam is a retired teacher and administrator for the Buffalo Public School System. He has been married to his wife Nancy for 47 years and they are the proud parents of a son Scott, a lawyer in New York City, and daughter Aimee, a counselor at Erie Community College.

Gerald B. Obstein

Gerald B. Obstein

Jerry Obstein played varsity football and was manager for coach Fred Braun’s basketball teams in the early 1960’s at Bennett. Obstein later went on to coach at Bennett for one year (1985 – ’86) and many successful years at South Park H.S. At Bennett, Obstein got his start in coaching as the Assistant football coach on the 1985 Harvard Cup co- champion football squad. He also coach swimming and the 1986 Scalp and Blade champion track squad. Obstein then moved on to a head coaching position at South Park H.S., where he coached football, swimming and tennis. He quickly established himself as one of the top football coaches in the area. His South Park squads won the Harvard Cup in 1988, 1992, 1993 and 1996. The Sparks 1993 team finished as the top ranked large school team in the W.N.Y. Coaches poll. Obstein’s many career accolades include Channel 7 W.N.Y. Coach Of The year in 1986, W.N.Y. large school “Coach of the decade” in the 90’s, Harvard Cup Hall Of Fame inductee in 2005. He also was on the coaching staff for the Lions Club All-Star game in 1993 and 1994.

Jerry Obstein and his wife Faye have three sons, Aaron, Jason and Jared and reside in the Town of Tonawanda. Coach O usually can be seen any given Saturday in the fall at a local high school football game.

Arnold Weintraub

Arnold Weintraub

Arnie was born in Buffalo and attended school # 64 thru the sixth grade. His family moved to Houston, Texas where he attended Cullen Junior High School. The Weintraub family relocated to Buffalo at the beginning of Arnies freshman year at Bennett.

At Bennett Arnie competed in football for three years as a guard playing both offense and defense. While competing in football Arnie played an important role in helping Bennett win two Harvard Cups his sophomore and junior years. A three year letterman in football he attained first team All-High status his junior and senior years.

Upon graduation from Bennett with honors, Arnie attended the University of Pennsylvania and played on the junior varsity football team. Following his freshman year at Penn he matriculated to the University of Buffalo. In 1975 Arnie married Helen Roessler. They had two daughters Jennifer and Shana. While working for Benderson Development in Pittsburgh in 1998 Arnie passed away.
